REPORTS

State Faculty President Report

Jay reported that he will have to leave the meeting midway through the meeting and that Timi would stand in for him as the chair of the meeting at that point.

He has been communicating with College Media Advisers to add JACC on that organization’s list of journalism education organizations.

He shared that he has been communicating with schools with journalism faculty retirements to emphasize the need to replace retirees and keep their programs rather than eliminate the programs. Some schools are eliminating programs or putting them on hold when someone retires as a means of managing tight budgets.

He would like to send out feelers to community colleges in states bordering California and letting their programs know they are welcome to join and participate in JACC.

Haipha indicated that she would like to see students surveyed at the convention to learn more of what they think about the activities and what they would like to see at future conventions. It would also be good to survey students after regional conferences. She volunteered to develop survey material.

She said that the biggest complaints she has heard are about speakers who don’t show or come in late or unprepared.  Is there anything we can do about that? No, they are volunteers and things happen. Timi reported on her procedures for getting volunteer speakers and how she follows up with them on reminders as the conference approaches.

Haipha also had questions about improving JACC’s financial statement by looking at additional fundraising activities. Rich and Timi reviewed some of the efforts underway. A reduction of fees or dues is not likely.

Helen suggested that the JACC web site include an easily accessible list of current members and that JACC develop a Wikipedia page.

She would also like to see student officer roles better defined, even if it is to create a list of possible activities traditionally performed by student officers.

Samantha shared some ideas or goals she’d like student officers to participate in over the next year and beyond. These included:

  • Student officers need to be more a face for JACC and represent the organization in other venues, including going to high schools in their area and introduce high school students to community college journalism and JACC;
  • JACC should have a five-year plan of what we want to accomplish in the next five years and that we should develop a mission statement, goals and something resembling a business plan for the organization;
  • We need to continue to develop strategies for helping programs experiencing problems. Students, not just faculty, need to be part of these planning and execution processes;
  • We need to have a stronger presence at other organization conferences, including national conferences, promoting JACC; and
  • Student officers need to have a student officers meeting away from faculty to discuss goals.
